There is a large scale Artificial Intelligence (AI) opportunity to transform the performance small to medium manufacturing (SMM) through improved productivity, energy, and maintenance.

  • Machine learning and AI tools combined with low cost sensors are leveraged to better understand and improve manufacturing processes. AI accelerates results delivery with reduced expertise and labor through 1) multimodal sensor fusion, 2) digital twin modeling of manufacturing processes and energy systems, and 3) business case analysis and reporting.

  • HBS sustains long-term partnerships with SMM ($1B+ market) to enhance productivity, energy, sustainability, and maintenance

  • SMMs commonly don't have the technical expertise to identify and implement technology solutions and therefore hesitate to invest

Background expertise

  • Rutgers University Center for Advanced Energy Systems (CAES) (caes.rutgers.edu) has been the Field Manager for the US Department of Energy's Industrial Training and Assessment Center (ITAC) (itacs.university) since 1992.  Rutgers CAES are experts in helping SMMs with energy, productivity, and maintenance solutions and providing experiential university educational opportunities.

  • Dr. Todd Rossi, Associate Director Rutgers CAES, is an experienced technology entrepreneur, technology developer, and university professor.

  • Deepen AI tool set to accelerate improved productivity, energy, and maintenance performance without extensive labor and expertise

  • Provide lower barriers to engage SMMs to build confidence including free assessments and initial sensor deployments and helping plan and execute initial projects

  • Invest in the long term partnerships - nurture an ongoing stream of profitable improvement projects that benefits clients, HBS, and public good (e.g. federal, state, and utilities)

  • Build out a scalable high margin technology platform that requiring less personal touch with clients as solutions are standardized and automated

  • Provide low-cost sensors ($20) that are deployed initially without cost to uncover and better understand the deeper underlying opportunities

  • Leverage appropriate engineering AI models and digital twins for deeper and more accurate insights and reduce client engagement costs

  • Bring incentives to client business cases to leverage public goods money (e.g. federal, state, and utility) that want to help make these manufactures more efficient, less emissions, and more globally competitive.
